OBD-II fault code

P2140: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch E/F Voltage Correlation

What it means

Channels E and F of the throttle/pedal position sensor disagree by more than the allowed tolerance.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The throttle and accelerator pedal position sensors provide related signals so the control module can tell how far the pedal is pressed and how the throttle is positioned. This code sets when sensor channels E and F disagree beyond the permitted correlation range, which can make electronic throttle control unsafe or unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Worn or damaged sensor track in the throttle or pedal position sensor
  2. Poor connector contact or damaged wiring
  3. Sensor misalignment or mechanical wear
  4. Fault in the throttle control module

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and inspect live data for throttle or pedal channels E and F, noting whether their readings diverge as the pedal is moved.
  2. Inspect the pedal and throttle-body connectors and harness for loose pins, corrosion, rubbing, or damage.
  3. With ignition on and the engine off, slowly move the pedal and check that channels E and F change smoothly and maintain the relationship specified by the manufacturer.
  4. Inspect sensor mounting and the throttle mechanism for looseness, contamination, or wear that could cause sensor misalignment.
  5. Test sensor circuits and the throttle control module using the manufacturer's procedure before replacing a sensor or module.

Common fixes

  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged wiring and connectors at the pedal or throttle body.
  • Correct sensor mounting or mechanical binding if it causes the E/F readings to disagree.
  • Replace the pedal or throttle position sensor assembly confirmed to have a worn or damaged track.
  • Repair the throttle control module only if its inputs, wiring, and sensors pass the specified checks.

Can I keep driving?

Because throttle response may be limited or unpredictable, avoid driving in fast traffic or situations where rapid acceleration is needed. If the vehicle surges, idles abnormally, or enters limp mode, stop somewhere safe and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
