OBD-II fault code

P2124: Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch D Circuit Intermittent

What it means

The "C" channel signal is below the lower threshold — usually a short to ground or an open signal wire.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Circuit D is a position signal from the throttle or accelerator pedal sensor that the control module checks alongside the other channels. P2124 sets when the D signal drops out or becomes intermittent, often because of a poor connection, an open wire, or a short to ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to ground
  2. Signal wire open
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced throttle response, possible limp mode
  • Hesitation or surging
  • Idle too high or too low

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and monitor live D-channel and related position readings to see whether the fault coincides with pedal movement, vibration, or a change in operating conditions.
  2. Inspect the D circuit connector and harness for loose or corroded pins, chafing, strain, or sections routed against vibrating parts.
  3. With the scan tool watching D data, gently move the harness and connector to reproduce a dropout without forcing the pedal or throttle.
  4. Check D-circuit continuity and for shorts to ground, then verify the sensor supply and ground against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring stays stable during testing, check the sensor assembly for an intermittent D track using the specified test procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure an intermittent D circuit connector.
  • Repair an open, chafed, or grounded D signal wire and secure the harness away from vibration or abrasion.
  • Clean or replace corroded terminals that interrupt the signal.
  • Replace the sensor assembly if its D track drops out with a stable circuit.

Can I keep driving?

The intermittent signal can cause sudden hesitation or reduced throttle response, so avoid high-speed driving and routes where you must accelerate quickly. If the fault causes unpredictable power delivery, stop safely rather than continuing in traffic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
