OBD-II fault code

P2038: Reductant Injection Air Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The reductant injection air-pressure sensor A reads inside the electrical range but does not match expected behaviour over time or load — slow response or wrong offset.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

On air-assisted DEF systems, sensor A measures the air pressure used to atomise reductant at the injector. The module sets P2038 when the signal stays within its electrical range but its response or offset does not agree with expected pressure behaviour over time or load.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor drift
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and graph sensor A pressure alongside engine load and dosing activity to identify when its response stops tracking expected changes.
  2. Check the live reading with the system inactive and operating, and compare its behaviour with the manufacturer's specification.
  3. Inspect sensor A's mounting and connector for looseness, corrosion, or contamination that could damp or distort the signal.
  4. Check the harness for damage and verify the circuit supply, ground, and signal remain stable during operation.
  5. If the mounting and wiring are sound, test sensor A for slow response or offset and replace it if it fails the manufacturer's checks.

Common fixes

  • Secure sensor A and its mounting.
  • Clean and reconnect the sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged or loose wiring in the sensor circuit.
  • Replace a drifting or aged reductant injection air-pressure sensor A.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle runs normally, cautious driving to arrange diagnosis is generally reasonable, but do not ignore DEF or NOx warnings. Continued inaccurate pressure feedback can impair dosing, increase emissions, and lead to a start countdown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
