OBD-II fault code

P203A: Reductant Level Sensor Circuit

What it means

A general electrical fault is reported on DEF level sensor A — open, shorted, or out of plausibility. Some tanks use multiple level senders to cover irregular tank shapes; this is the primary one.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The reductant level sensor reports how much DEF is in the tank so the control module can estimate remaining supply. P203A sets when the module detects a general electrical or plausibility fault in the level-sensor circuit, which can make the displayed level unreliable.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sender failed — float, swing arm, or rheostat
  2. Harness or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool DEF level with the dashboard display and the actual tank level.
  2. Inspect the tank sender connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, damaged insulation, or moisture entry.
  3. Check the sensor circuit supply, ground, and signal against the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. If the tank design allows safe access, observe whether the reported level changes smoothly as the sender moves or as the vehicle's level changes.
  5. If wiring is sound but the reading is absent or implausible, test the sender and replace the failed level sensor or sender assembly.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect and clean the level-sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connections at the DEF tank.
  • Replace a failed DEF level sender or sensor assembly.

Can I keep driving?

You can generally drive if the vehicle runs normally, but verify the DEF level and keep enough in the tank because the displayed amount may be wrong. A persistent fault can trigger a DEF warning or start countdown and may cause an emissions inspection failure.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
