What it means
The EGT sensor on bank 2 sensor 2 reads above the upper plausibility limit — open signal or short to B+.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The Bank 2 Sensor 2 exhaust gas temperature sensor reports exhaust temperature to the control module. The module monitors whether its signal stays within the expected electrical range. P2036 sets when the Bank 2 Sensor 2 signal is too high, which can result from an open signal circuit, a short to supply, or a sensor fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open signal line
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Possible reduced engine performance
- Possible emissions-control or exhaust-system warning
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare live Bank 2 Sensor 2 temperature with other EGT readings, including with the exhaust cold, to identify an implausibly high value.
- Locate Bank 2 Sensor 2 using vehicle service information and inspect its harness for an open signal wire or insulation damage near a supply wire.
- Check the connector for corrosion, loose terminals, or poor contact that may interrupt the signal.
- Test the Bank 2 Sensor 2 signal circuit for an open and a short to supply, following the wiring diagram.
- Compare sensor output with the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the sensor is at fault.
- Clear the code after repair and verify that Bank 2 Sensor 2 temperature rises plausibly as the exhaust warms.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose Bank 2 Sensor 2 connector terminals.
- Repair an open signal wire in the Bank 2 Sensor 2 circuit.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to a supply wire.
- Replace the Bank 2 Sensor 2 EGT sensor if its output is outside the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Driving may be possible, but unreliable Bank 2 Sensor 2 data can affect exhaust-system control and may reduce performance. Avoid heavy loads if a warning or power reduction occurs and arrange diagnosis promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
