OBD-II fault code

P2039: Reductant Injection Air Pressure Sensor A Circuit Low

What it means

The reductant injection air-pressure sensor A reads below its lower plausibility limit — short to ground or sensor internal short.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

On air-assisted DEF systems, sensor A reports the air pressure used to atomise reductant at the injector. P2039 sets when its circuit signal falls below the module's expected lower limit, indicating a low electrical reading rather than an excessive one.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live sensor A pressure to confirm whether the low reading is current and under what conditions it occurs.
  2. Inspect the sensor A connector and nearby harness for corrosion, rubbed-through insulation, or a wire contacting ground.
  3. Check the circuit ground, supply, and signal at the sensor using the vehicle wiring diagram and compare readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. With power isolated as specified for the vehicle, check for an unintended short to ground in the signal wire and inspect connector pin tension.
  5. If the wiring and connections pass, test sensor A itself and replace it if its output remains below specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean corroded connector pins and secure the connection.
  • Repair a chafed signal wire or short to ground.
  • Replace a faulty reductant injection air-pressure sensor A.

Can I keep driving?

Cautious driving may be possible if the vehicle behaves normally, but have the low signal checked promptly and heed any DEF warnings or countdown. A failed dosing system can increase NOx emissions and may eventually prevent restarting.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
