OBD-II fault code

P209B: Reductant Injection Air Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The air pressure sensor A signal is within the electrical range but does not meet the expected performance criteria. The code does not by itself identify the sensor or its mounting as the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Reductant injection air-pressure sensor A reports pressure in the air-assisted reductant delivery system so the control module can check that injection is behaving as expected. P209B sets when the signal is electrically plausible but its response or measured range does not meet the module's performance criteria; it does not by itself prove the sensor is faulty.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor drift
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live sensor A pressure alongside reductant-system commands to identify when the reading deviates from expected behavior.
  2. Inspect sensor A mounting, connector, and nearby air or reductant lines for looseness, leaks, contamination, or wiring damage.
  3. Check sensor A supply, ground, and signal wiring against the manufacturer's specification to rule out a circuit problem.
  4. Compare sensor A readings with system conditions and other available pressure data using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. If mounting and wiring are sound, test sensor A for drift and verify the reductant air system can produce the expected response.

Common fixes

  • Secure sensor A if its mounting is loose and inspect associated lines for leaks.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contact in the sensor A circuit.
  • Replace sensor A if its signal is confirmed to drift beyond the manufacturer's criteria.
  • Repair an air-system fault affecting the pressure response if testing identifies one.

Can I keep driving?

Driving may remain possible, but follow any DEF or NOx warning and countdown because some vehicles can limit operation or prevent restarting. Have the cause addressed promptly to avoid continued emissions-system faults or a no-start restriction.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
