What it means
The ECM detects a circuit fault on the a/c compressor motor current sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The A/C compressor motor current sensor measures electrical current used by the compressor, helping the control module manage and protect compressor operation. P0EAF indicates a general fault in the current sensor circuit, so the module cannot reliably use its reading; the code does not specify whether the signal is low, high, or out of range.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid system warning light
- Air conditioning may not cool
- Cooling may be intermittent
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and related compressor or hybrid codes to see when the current sensor circuit fault was detected.
- Inspect the current sensor connector and harness for loose connections, corrosion, damaged insulation, or heat exposure.
- Check the sensor circuit's reference or supply, ground, and signal connections using the manufacturer's wiring information.
- Test the current sensor wiring for opens, shorts, and poor connections with the system made safe according to manufacturer instructions.
- If the wiring checks pass, compare current sensor operation with the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the sensor has failed.
Common fixes
- Reseat the current sensor connector and clean or repair corroded terminals.
- Repair damaged, open, or shorted current sensor wiring.
- Restore a poor ground or reference connection.
- Replace the compressor current sensor if it fails its specified checks.
Can I keep driving?
A/C cooling may be reduced or unavailable, and a hybrid warning may appear. Follow any stop-driving instruction from the vehicle; otherwise, avoid relying on cabin climate control and arrange diagnosis soon.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
