What it means
The control module monitors the electrical signals on the generator’s U, V, and W phase circuits. It sets this code when a phase signal rises above the expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator's U, V, and W phase circuits carry power through the inverter, which monitors their electrical signals. P0E0E sets when a phase signal rises above the expected range, potentially due to a phase wire shorted to high voltage, an open winding, or poor connector contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Phase wire shorted to high voltage
- Open winding
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Hybrid/EV system warning light may turn on
- Reduced power or charging performance
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for related inverter or generator codes to identify when the high phase signal occurred.
- Compare U, V, and W phase readings in live data, where available, to determine whether one phase or several show the abnormal condition.
- Following the vehicle's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect phase connectors and harnesses for damage, loose or corroded terminals, and contact with higher-voltage wiring.
- With the high-voltage system isolated according to the manufacturer's procedure, test each phase circuit for a short to a higher-voltage circuit and check connector contact.
- If the harness passes, test the generator windings and inverter phase outputs using the manufacturer's procedure to locate an open winding or inverter fault.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring shorted to a higher-voltage circuit.
- Clean or repair corroded, loose, or damaged phase connector terminals.
- Repair a damaged phase harness.
- Repair or replace a generator with a confirmed open winding.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid demanding driving if hybrid power or charging is reduced, and stop safely if propulsion becomes unreliable. Continued operation with an abnormal phase signal can lead the hybrid system to restrict power further.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
