OBD-II fault code

P0DFC: Generator Position Sensor Not Learned

What it means

The hybrid control module has not learned the rotor position offset for the generator. Phase commutation cannot be optimised until learning completes.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The generator position sensor tells the hybrid control module where the rotor is so it can time current to the generator phases. This code sets when the module has no completed learned rotor-position offset, leaving phase commutation less optimised; this may happen after adaptation is lost or a sensor is replaced before the required learning process.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Adaptation lost after battery disconnect
  2. Sensor replaced without learn procedure

Symptoms

  • Hybrid/EV system warning light on
  • Reduced power or altered hybrid operation

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and related hybrid-system codes, then confirm in scan-tool data that the generator position offset is marked as not learned.
  2. Review recent battery disconnection, control-module work, or generator position-sensor replacement that could have cleared or invalidated the adaptation.
  3. Inspect the position sensor connector and wiring for damage or poor contact before attempting any learning procedure.
  4. Use the manufacturer’s service information and a capable scan tool to determine whether the specified position-learning procedure is required.
  5. If learning will not complete, diagnose the sensor reference and related circuits to the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Complete the manufacturer-specified generator position learning procedure when the system and conditions allow it.
  • Repair a loose or damaged position-sensor connector or harness.
  • Replace a position sensor only if testing shows it is faulty.
  • Address any confirmed control-module or adaptation-storage fault preventing learning.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle has normal power and no additional warnings, a short cautious drive may be possible, but altered hybrid operation can occur. Avoid hard acceleration and arrange diagnosis promptly, especially if power drops or warnings increase.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
