OBD-II fault code

P0DFE: Battery Charger Coolant Control Valve Control Circuit Low

What it means

The battery charger coolant control valve control circuit voltage is below the expected range. The valve may not regulate coolant flow as commanded, which can affect charger cooling or charging operation depending on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery charger coolant control valve directs coolant through the charger’s cooling circuit. The control module monitors the valve’s electrical control circuit and sets P0DFE when its voltage is lower than expected, so the valve may not follow commands to manage coolant flow.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wire shorted to ground
  2. Coil internal short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check charger coolant valve command and feedback data to see when the low-circuit fault occurs.
  2. With the vehicle safely powered down, inspect the valve connector and harness for moisture, corrosion, damaged insulation, or a wire touching ground.
  3. Check connector pins for corrosion or poor contact that could disrupt the valve control circuit.
  4. Using the vehicle’s wiring diagram, test the control wire for a short to ground and check circuit continuity as specified by the manufacturer.
  5. Measure the valve coil and control-circuit response against the manufacturer’s specification to distinguish a shorted coil from a harness fault.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose valve connector terminals.
  • Repair a control wire shorted to ground or damaged harness section.
  • Replace the battery charger coolant control valve if its coil is internally shorted.
  • Clear the code and confirm the valve responds to commands and charging operates normally.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on normal charging performance; charging may be slow, interrupted, or unavailable, and reduced cooling could affect the charger. If the vehicle displays a hybrid or high-voltage system warning, follow its instructions and arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
