What it means
The control circuit for the battery charger coolant control valve is open or has a fault. The valve may not regulate coolant flow as commanded, which can affect charger cooling or charging operation depending on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger coolant control valve directs coolant through the charger cooling circuit, and the control module monitors the valve’s electrical control circuit. This code sets when that circuit is open or cannot operate the valve as commanded, which can interfere with charger cooling and may prevent or interrupt charging.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in valve control wire
- Open valve actuator
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and note whether charging failed to start, stopped early, or ran at a reduced rate when the fault appeared.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to service information, inspect the coolant valve connector for a pushed-back pin, loose fit, corrosion, or damage.
- Trace the valve control wiring for breaks, chafing, or heat damage that could create an open circuit.
- Check continuity through the valve actuator and control circuit using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Test the valve control output and actuator against the manufacturer’s specification before replacing components.
Common fixes
- Reseat a pushed-back or loose terminal in the coolant valve connector.
- Repair an open or damaged valve control wire.
- Clean or repair corroded connector terminals and restore secure contact.
- Replace the valve actuator if it fails the manufacturer’s electrical test.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid relying on the vehicle to charge normally until the fault is addressed; charging may be slow, interrupted, or unavailable, and charger cooling may be affected. If the vehicle reports a charging or thermal warning, stop charging and follow the vehicle’s safety guidance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
