What it means
The required adaptation offset for generator position exceeds the calibrated learning window. Sensor or rotor mechanism out of nominal range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator position sensor provides rotor-position information used by the hybrid control module to time electrical phase switching. This code sets when the offset needed to align the position signal exceeds the module’s allowed learning range, which can indicate reference drift or mechanical movement at the rotor mounting.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor reference drifted
- Mechanical drift in rotor mounting
Symptoms
- Hybrid/EV system warning light on
- Reduced power or altered hybrid operation
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related generator position or hybrid-system codes that may help explain the excessive learned offset.
- Review available live position and learned-offset data for a value beyond the permitted range, using the manufacturer’s diagnostic information.
- With the hybrid system safely disabled, inspect accessible position-sensor mounting and wiring for looseness, damage, or displacement.
- Check the sensor reference signal and related connections using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- If the reference circuit is sound, have the rotor mounting and mechanical alignment checked against the manufacturer’s service information.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or loose generator position-sensor wiring or connections.
- Secure or correctly position a displaced sensor, following the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Replace a sensor confirmed to have a shifted reference characteristic.
- Correct confirmed mechanical movement or misalignment at the rotor mounting.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid demanding acceleration because the generator may deliver reduced or irregular assistance. Stop safely if power changes abruptly or the hybrid warning is accompanied by unusual noise.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
