What it means
The cell balancing circuit N reports a stuck on condition. Cell-group voltage equalization may be impaired on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Balancing channel N is part of the battery management system that reduces charge differences among battery cell groups. This code means the system detects channel N remaining on when its control logic expects it to be off.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Balancing switch or driver stuck on
- Shorted balancing-circuit wiring
- BMS driver fault
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and BMS codes, then compare channel N's commanded state with its reported state and cell-group voltage trend.
- Power the vehicle down using the manufacturer's service procedure and inspect channel N wiring and connectors for pinched insulation, conductive debris, corrosion, or a short.
- Test the channel N circuit for shorts and verify that its signal changes as commanded, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- Check whether channel N continues balancing when commanded off and compare the result with the manufacturer's diagnostic criteria.
- If the harness passes, test the channel N balancing switch and BMS driver to identify which is holding the circuit on.
Common fixes
- Repair a shorted channel N wire or contaminated or damaged connector.
- Replace a channel N balancing switch that remains on when commanded off.
- Repair or replace the BMS driver if its channel N output remains active despite a valid control command.
- Recheck channel N operation and cell-group balance after repair.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving because the battery system may reduce power, restrict charging, or enter limp mode. Avoid repeated charging or heavy acceleration if warnings appear; a balancing channel stuck on can worsen cell imbalance or damage the affected group.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
