What it means
The cell balancing circuit L reports a stuck on condition. Cell-group voltage equalization may be impaired on this channel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Balancing circuit L switches the equalization path for the battery cell group assigned to channel L. The battery management system monitors whether the path turns off when it is no longer commanded on. This code sets when the L path appears to remain active, which can over-discharge or otherwise disturb that group.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Balancing switch or driver stuck on
- Shorted balancing-circuit wiring
- BMS driver fault
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live battery readings for the L balancing command and assigned cell-group voltage to see whether the fault occurred when L should have been off.
- Compare the L group’s voltage trend with neighbouring groups and review whether the L command changes while the fault is present.
- With the high-voltage system made safe according to the vehicle’s service procedure, inspect the L-channel connector and harness for shorts, pin damage, or chafing.
- Test the L balancing switch and circuit for a short or a path that remains conducting when the module commands it off, following the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
- If the switch and wiring behave correctly, have the battery management system driver output for channel L tested.
Common fixes
- Repair shorted or chafed L-channel wiring and correct connector damage.
- Replace a balancing switch or component that remains on when commanded off.
- Repair or replace the battery management system driver if its L output is stuck on.
Can I keep driving?
Treat this as a prompt service issue because an L balancing path that stays on can disturb its cell group and lead to reduced power or charging limits. Avoid long trips; if the vehicle loses power, enters limp mode, or shows a battery warning, stop safely and arrange hybrid or EV service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
