OBD-II fault code

P0D8C: Battery Charger Coupler Status Indicator Control Circuit C/Open

What it means

The control circuit C of the battery charger coupler status indicator reports a control circuit/open condition. Charging status display impaired.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The charger coupler status indicator uses control circuit C to display a charging or coupler state. The control module monitors circuit C for an open path and sets P0D8C when it does not detect the expected electrical connection, which can disable the circuit C indication.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in indicator wire
  2. Indicator lamp burnt out

Symptoms

  • Coupler status indicator may not work correctly

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check whether the code returns when the circuit C indicator is commanded.
  2. Observe the coupler status indicator during a charging attempt and check whether the indication assigned to circuit C is dark or erratic.
  3. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect circuit C wiring and connectors for looseness, corrosion, damage, or a broken conductor.
  4. Check the circuit C indicator lamp or display element for an open or failed element.
  5. Test continuity through circuit C wiring and the indicator using the manufacturer's procedure to locate the open.
  6. If the wiring and indicator pass, check the control module connector and circuit C output.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded circuit C connector.
  • Repair a broken or disconnected circuit C wire.
  • Replace the failed circuit C indicator lamp or display element.
  • Repair the circuit C module connection if testing identifies it.

Can I keep driving?

This code can impair the coupler status display without proving that charging has stopped. Confirm charging through another vehicle status display, and stop if the vehicle reports a charging fault.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
