What it means
The control circuit A of the battery charger coupler status indicator reports a control circuit low condition. Charging status display impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The charger coupler status indicator uses control circuit A to display charging or coupler status. The control module monitors the circuit signal level and sets P0D87 when circuit A is pulled lower than expected, commonly by a short to ground or an internally shorted indicator element.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to ground
- Lamp internal short
Symptoms
- Coupler status indicator may not work correctly
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to capture freeze-frame data and see whether circuit A is flagged low during a charging or indicator test.
- Check the coupler status display for a missing or abnormal circuit A indication while charging is requested.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect circuit A wiring for rubbed insulation, pinched sections, or contact with ground.
- Inspect circuit A connectors and the indicator element for moisture, corrosion, or visible damage that could create a short.
- Test circuit A for an unintended path to ground and isolate the indicator from the harness to distinguish a wire short from an internally shorted lamp.
- If the circuit and indicator test normally, check the module connector and circuit A driver using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed or pinched circuit A wiring that is shorted to ground.
- Clean or repair a corroded or damaged circuit A connector.
- Replace the circuit A indicator element if it is internally shorted.
- Repair the circuit A module connection if testing locates the fault there.
Can I keep driving?
P0D87 can make the coupler status display unreliable, but it does not alone establish whether charging is occurring. Confirm charge status through another vehicle display or charging-system indication, and discontinue charging if the vehicle reports a fault.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
