What it means
The control circuit B of the battery charger coupler status indicator reports a control circuit low condition. Charging status display impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The charger coupler status indicator uses control circuit B to show charging or coupler status. The control module monitors the circuit signal level and sets P0D8A when circuit B is lower than expected, often because its wire is shorted to ground or its indicator element is internally shorted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wire shorted to ground
- Lamp internal short
Symptoms
- Coupler status indicator may not work correctly
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to capture freeze-frame data and check whether circuit B is flagged low during a charging or indicator command.
- Check whether the coupler status indication assigned to circuit B is missing or abnormal during a charging attempt.
- With the vehicle powered down as required by the manufacturer, inspect circuit B wiring for rubbed insulation, pinching, or contact with ground.
- Inspect circuit B connectors and the indicator element for moisture, corrosion, or damage that could cause a short.
- Test circuit B for an unintended path to ground, then isolate the indicator from the harness to identify whether the wire or element is shorted.
- If the circuit and indicator pass, check the module connector and circuit B driver using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed or pinched circuit B wiring that is shorted to ground.
- Clean or repair a corroded or damaged circuit B connector.
- Replace the circuit B indicator element if it is internally shorted.
- Repair the circuit B module connection if testing locates the fault there.
Can I keep driving?
P0D8A makes the circuit B status indication unreliable, but it alone does not establish whether the charger is operating. Verify charge status through another vehicle display, and stop charging if a charging fault is reported.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
