What it means
The control circuit B of the battery charger coupler status indicator reports a control circuit/open condition. Charging status display impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The charger coupler status indicator uses control circuit B to display one of the charging or coupler states. The control module monitors circuit B for an open path and sets P0D89 when it does not see the expected connection, which can leave the circuit B indication unavailable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in indicator wire
- Indicator lamp burnt out
Symptoms
- Coupler status indicator may not work correctly
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check whether the code returns when the circuit B indicator is commanded.
- Observe the coupler status indicator during a charging attempt and identify whether the indication assigned to circuit B is missing or erratic.
- With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect circuit B wiring and connectors for a loose plug, corrosion, damage, or a broken conductor.
- Check the circuit B lamp or display element for a failed or open element.
- Test continuity through circuit B wiring and the indicator with the manufacturer's procedure to locate the open.
- If the harness and indicator pass, check the control module connector and circuit B output.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded circuit B connector.
- Repair a broken or disconnected circuit B wire.
- Replace the failed circuit B indicator lamp or display element.
- Repair the circuit B module connection if testing identifies it.
Can I keep driving?
This fault can make the coupler status display incomplete, but it does not by itself mean charging has stopped. Confirm charging through another vehicle status display and stop if the vehicle reports a charging fault.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
