What it means
The control circuit A of the battery charger coupler status indicator reports a control circuit/open condition. Charging status display impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The charger coupler status indicator uses control circuit A to show a charging or coupler status. The control module monitors this circuit for an open path; it sets P0D86 when circuit A does not provide the expected electrical connection, so the indicator may fail to show status.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in indicator wire
- Indicator lamp burnt out
Symptoms
- Coupler status indicator may not work correctly
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check whether the code returns while the coupler indicator is commanded on.
- Observe the coupler status indicator during a charging attempt to confirm whether the display associated with circuit A is dark or erratic.
- With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect circuit A wiring and connectors for a loose plug, corrosion, damage, or a broken conductor.
- Check the circuit A indicator lamp or display element for an open or failed element.
- Test continuity through circuit A wiring and the indicator using the manufacturer's procedure to locate the open.
- If the wiring and indicator pass, check the control module's circuit A output and connector for a fault.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded circuit A connector.
- Repair a broken or disconnected circuit A wire.
- Replace the failed circuit A indicator lamp or display element.
- Repair the circuit A connection at the control module if testing identifies it.
Can I keep driving?
The code affects the coupler status display and does not by itself confirm that charging has stopped. Verify charging from the vehicle's charging screen or other reliable status indication, and stop if the vehicle reports a charging fault.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
