What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the battery charger hybrid/ev battery output voltage sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger’s hybrid/EV battery output voltage sensor tells the control module the voltage leaving the charger. This code sets when that reading is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected during charging, even if the circuit is not simply reading low or high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty voltage sensor
- Damaged wiring or connector
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review charger operation and battery output voltage readings at the time the range/performance fault occurred.
- Inspect the battery output voltage sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, looseness, or moisture.
- Compare the reported voltage with other available charging data to identify whether it is implausible or fails to track charger operation.
- Test the voltage sensor signal circuit for continuity, shorts, and poor connections using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Check the sensor response against the manufacturer's specifications and replace it only after wiring faults are ruled out.
Common fixes
- Secure the sensor connector and clean corroded terminals.
- Repair damaged or poorly connected wiring in the output voltage sensor circuit.
- Replace the battery output voltage sensor if its response fails the specified range/performance test.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may be limited or unavailable, and reduced power or limp mode can restrict driving; confirm charging and available range before setting out. Stop safely if propulsion power drops enough to make driving unsafe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
