What it means
The ECM detects a low fault on the battery charger hybrid/ev battery output voltage sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger’s hybrid/EV battery output voltage sensor reports charger output voltage to the control module. This code sets when the signal is lower than the module expects, which can result from a signal short to ground, a faulty sensor, or resistance or an open in the circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal circuit short to ground
- Faulty voltage sensor
- Open or high-resistance wiring or connector
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check the charger status and reported battery output voltage to confirm the low reading is present.
- Inspect the voltage sensor connector and harness for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or wiring contacting ground.
- Check the signal circuit for a short to ground and inspect the connector and wiring for an open or high resistance using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test the voltage sensor and its circuit while comparing readings with the manufacturer's specifications.
- Repair the wiring or connector first if the circuit is shorted, open, or resistive; replace the sensor only if it fails testing.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground.
- Repair an open or high-resistance connection and clean or replace corroded terminals.
- Replace the battery output voltage sensor if it fails the specified test.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may be slowed or unavailable, and the vehicle may limit power or enter limp mode; avoid trips that depend on normal charging or electric range. If power is reduced, stop safely and follow the vehicle's warnings.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
