What it means
The signal from the battery charger 14-volt output voltage sensor is intermittent or erratic. The reading may be unreliable.
At a glance
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger's 14-volt output voltage sensor sends its output reading to the control module. P0D46 sets when that signal is intermittent or erratic, such as when a loose connection or unstable ground makes the reported voltage jump or drop out.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Examine freeze-frame data and live output voltage sensor readings for dropouts or sudden jumps, especially around charging interruptions.
- Check that the 14-volt output voltage sensor connector is fully seated and that its pins are clean and secure.
- Inspect the sensor wiring and ground connection for looseness, chafing, or other signs of intermittent contact.
- Following the manufacturer's safety procedure, monitor the signal while gently moving the accessible harness to help locate a vibration-sensitive connection.
- If the wiring and ground remain stable, test the sensor's output against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the output voltage sensor connector.
- Clean or repair an intermittent ground or connector contact.
- Repair damaged output voltage sensor wiring.
- Replace the sensor if its signal remains erratic with stable wiring and ground.
Can I keep driving?
Charging can interrupt or fail to start unpredictably, and the vehicle may limit charging functions. Avoid relying on the charger until the intermittent fault is resolved.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
