What it means
The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the battery charger 14 volt output current sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger's 14-volt output current sensor reports how much current the charger supplies to the control module. P0D48 sets when the signal does not behave within the expected range or performance criteria, so it cannot be used reliably to control or monitor output current.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live output current sensor data to check whether the reading tracks changes in charging conditions or remains implausible.
- Inspect the sensor mounting for displacement, looseness, or damage that could affect its measurement.
- Check the sensor connector, wiring, supply, and ground for faults that could distort the reading.
- Compare the sensor's reported current with an independent measurement using the manufacturer's safe test procedure.
- If the circuit and mounting are sound but readings remain outside specification, test the sensor for drift or calibration failure.
Common fixes
- Secure the output current sensor in its correct mounting position.
- Clean or repair a connector, ground, or wire causing an inaccurate signal.
- Replace a 14-volt output current sensor that has drifted outside specification.
Can I keep driving?
Charging may be interrupted, slow, or unavailable, and the vehicle may limit charging functions. Avoid depending on the charger's output until the current reading is reliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
