OBD-II fault code

P0D45: Battery Charger 14 Volt Output Voltage Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The signal from the battery charger 14-volt output voltage sensor is above the expected electrical range. The reading may be unreliable.

At a glance

  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery charger's 14-volt output voltage sensor provides the control module with a reading of the charger's low-voltage output. P0D45 sets when that sensor's signal is higher than the expected electrical range, so the module cannot trust the reported output voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live 14-volt output voltage sensor data to confirm the high reading and when it appears.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, damage, or a signal wire touching B+.
  3. Check the sensor supply, ground, and signal wiring against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Test for a signal wire short to B+ and for an open sensor circuit using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the circuit is sound, test the 14-volt output voltage sensor and replace it only if it fails specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean corrosion and secure the output voltage sensor connector.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to B+ or an open in the sensor circuit.
  • Replace a failed 14-volt output voltage sensor.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may not start, may be interrupted, or may be slower than expected, and charging functions may be limited. Avoid relying on normal charging until the fault is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
