OBD-II fault code

P0D44: Battery Charger 14 Volt Output Voltage Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The signal from the battery charger 14-volt output voltage sensor is below the expected electrical range. The reading may be unreliable.

At a glance

  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery charger's 14-volt output voltage sensor reports its output voltage to the control module. P0D44 sets when the sensor signal falls below the expected electrical range, leaving the module without a trustworthy output-voltage reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Charge status indicator shows fault
  • Charging may not start or interrupts
  • Slower-than-expected charge rate

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live 14-volt output voltage sensor readings to confirm when the low signal occurs.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and signal wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or contact with ground.
  3. Check the sensor's supply, ground, and signal paths against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  4. Test the signal wire for a short to ground and inspect for an internal sensor short using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the 14-volt output voltage sensor and replace it only if its signal remains below specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean corroded connector pins and restore a secure connection.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or an open caused by damaged wiring.
  • Replace a shorted or failed 14-volt output voltage sensor.

Can I keep driving?

Charging may fail to start, be interrupted, or run slowly, and the vehicle may limit charging functions. Treat charging as unreliable until repaired and follow any vehicle warning about the charging system.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
