What it means
The signal from the battery charger 14-volt output voltage sensor is outside the expected range or performance criteria. The reading may be unreliable.
At a glance
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery charger's 14-volt output voltage sensor measures the charger's low-voltage output for control-module monitoring. P0D43 sets when the signal is electrically plausible but does not track the expected output-voltage behavior or range, which can make charging control unreliable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor mounting displaced
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Charge status indicator shows fault
- Charging may not start or interrupts
- Slower-than-expected charge rate
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live data to compare the 14-volt output voltage sensor reading with operating conditions and check whether it tracks changes in charger output.
- Inspect the sensor and its mounting for displacement, looseness, or damage that could affect the measurement.
- Check the sensor connector, wiring, supply, and ground for faults that could distort an otherwise plausible signal.
- Compare the sensor reading with an independent measurement of the charger's 14-volt output using the manufacturer's safe test procedure.
- If mounting and wiring are sound but the sensor reading remains outside the manufacturer's expected range, test the sensor for drift or calibration failure.
Common fixes
- Secure the output voltage sensor in its correct mounting position.
- Clean or repair a connector or wire causing a distorted signal.
- Replace a 14-volt output voltage sensor that has drifted outside specification.
Can I keep driving?
The charger may refuse to start, interrupt charging, or charge more slowly, and the vehicle may limit charging functions. Do not count on the 14-volt output being controlled reliably until the sensor fault is fixed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
