OBD-II fault code

P0C83: Hybrid/EV Battery Temperature Sensor H Circuit Low

What it means

The HV battery temperature sensor H reports a circuit low fault. Cell-group temperature monitoring impaired on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

HV battery temperature sensor H reports the temperature of its assigned cell group to the battery management system. P0C83 sets when the sensor H signal is abnormally low electrically, which can result from a signal short to ground, a shorted sensor, or a poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a hybrid-capable scan tool to capture freeze-frame data and check sensor H's reported temperature and circuit status against nearby battery sensors.
  2. Inspect sensor H's connector and accessible wiring for corrosion, damaged insulation, pin displacement, or a signal wire contacting ground.
  3. With the high-voltage system isolated using the manufacturer's procedure, check connector pin condition and continuity in the sensor H circuit.
  4. Test the sensor H signal for an unintended short to ground using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and diagnostic procedure.
  5. If the wiring is not shorted, test sensor H against the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the sensor itself is internally shorted.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor H connector pins.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or other damaged sensor H wiring.
  • Replace sensor H if it fails the specified circuit or sensor test.
  • Clear the code and confirm sensor H data is plausible after the repair.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid charging if the hybrid warning or reduced-power mode is present; the battery controller may restrict operation because it cannot trust sensor H's temperature signal. Stop if the vehicle loses substantial power or shows a battery-temperature warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
