OBD-II fault code

P0BD3: Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor "C" Circuit Low

What it means

The ECM detects a circuit low fault on the drive motor inverter temperature sensor c circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor inverter temperature sensor C monitors temperature at a specific point in the drive motor inverter for motor control and heat protection. This code sets when the sensor C circuit voltage falls below its expected range, commonly because the signal is shorted to ground or the sensor is internally shorted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and compare sensor C live temperature with other drive motor inverter readings to confirm the signal is unusually low.
  2. With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect the sensor C connector for corrosion, damaged pins, or a loose connection.
  3. Inspect the sensor C signal wire for chafing or contact with ground, particularly around the inverter and connector.
  4. Test the sensor C circuit for a short to ground and check its ground reference using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. Test the sensor C element against the manufacturer's specification and verify the reading after the confirmed fault is repaired.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor C connector terminals where repair is appropriate.
  • Repair the sensor C signal wire if it is shorted to ground or damaged.
  • Replace drive motor inverter temperature sensor C if it tests internally shorted.
  • Recheck live temperature data and clear the code after repair.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and heavy loads because the vehicle may limit drive motor power or enter limp mode. If power drops sharply or a shutdown warning appears, stop safely; an unreliable sensor signal can prompt protective operation.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
