What it means
The control module detects a high signal in the hybrid/EV battery pack voltage sense D circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery management module monitors voltage sense channel D for the hybrid or EV battery pack. P0B21 sets when the D-channel signal is higher than expected, which may be caused by a short to voltage, an open sensing circuit, or a poor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to voltage
- Open sensing circuit
- Poor electrical connection
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and compare channel D live voltage with other pack-sense channels to confirm the high signal and the conditions when it occurs.
- Check related voltage-sense codes for signs of a shared harness, connection, or battery monitoring issue.
- Inspect the channel D connector and wiring for backed-out terminals, corrosion, open conductors, damaged insulation, or contact with a voltage source.
- Use the manufacturer's wiring information to check channel D for an open circuit or short to voltage and verify circuit connections to specification.
- If the wiring checks out, have the channel D sensing component and monitoring hardware evaluated with high-voltage safety precautions.
Common fixes
- Reseat or repair a loose channel D connector.
- Repair an open or shorted-to-voltage section of channel D wiring.
- Replace a damaged or corroded channel D connector or harness section.
- Replace a confirmed faulty sensing component or battery monitoring module.
Can I keep driving?
Power output or charging may be restricted, so avoid long trips and do not depend on full electric performance. Stop safely if power drops sharply or a high-voltage warning appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
