OBD-II fault code

P0B20: Hybrid/EV Battery Pack Voltage Sense D Circuit Low

What it means

The control module detects a low signal in the hybrid/EV battery pack voltage sense D circuit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery management module monitors the voltage signal from pack sense channel D. P0B20 sets when that signal is below the expected level, which can happen when the signal wire is shorted to ground or the sensing circuit has a fault or poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Sensing circuit fault
  3. Poor electrical connection

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare channel D live voltage with the other pack-sense readings to confirm the low signal and its timing.
  2. Check for other voltage-sense codes that might point to a shared wiring or module issue.
  3. Inspect the channel D connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, chafing, or crushed insulation that could let the signal wire contact ground.
  4. Following the manufacturer's wiring information, test the channel D circuit for a short to ground and verify its connections to specification.
  5. If the circuit passes, have the channel D sensing component and battery monitoring hardware checked using high-voltage safety procedures.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose channel D connector and repair poor terminal contact.
  • Repair damaged channel D signal-wire insulation that is shorting to ground.
  • Replace a damaged or corroded channel D connector or wire.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty sensing component or battery monitoring module.

Can I keep driving?

The fault can lead to reduced power, limp mode, or charging problems, so keep trips short and avoid heavy loads. Stop if power becomes substantially limited or the vehicle displays a high-voltage warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
