What it means
The ECM detects a circuit fault on the hybrid/ev battery temperature sensor d circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Battery temperature sensor D reports the temperature of one monitored area of the hybrid or EV battery pack to the control module. The module checks the sensor circuit for a usable signal; this code sets when it detects a circuit fault that makes sensor D's reading unreliable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
- Pack cell imbalance approaching service threshold
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Read the hybrid control module's freeze-frame data and battery temperature live data to see when the fault occurred and whether sensor D is missing or implausible.
- Compare sensor D's reading with the other battery temperature sensors under similar conditions to identify an isolated fault.
- With the vehicle powered down as specified by the manufacturer, inspect sensor D's accessible wiring and connector for damage, moisture, corrosion, or a loose fit.
- Check the sensor D circuit for continuity, shorts, and connector contact problems using the manufacturer's wiring information.
- Test sensor D against the manufacturer's specification and check for battery cell imbalance or related pack faults before replacing parts.
Common fixes
- Seat and secure the sensor D connector.
- Repair damaged or corroded sensor D wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace a failed battery temperature sensor D.
- Address confirmed battery cell imbalance or pack service faults using the manufacturer's procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and charging if the vehicle limits power or charging, and stop safely if it warns of a battery fault or is losing propulsion. Continued use can leave the battery without reliable temperature monitoring and may trigger further power reduction or shutdown.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
