What it means
The ECM detects a circuit intermittent/erratic fault on the hybrid/ev battery temperature sensor b circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Battery temperature sensor B reports the temperature at its monitored point in the hybrid/EV battery pack, which the control module uses to manage battery operation. P0AC9 sets when that signal becomes erratic or intermittently drops out, leaving the module without a dependable temperature reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor connector not seated
- Noisy ground reference
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan for companion codes to identify whether sensor B's dropouts coincide with charging, vibration, or changing battery load.
- Graph sensor B live temperature data alongside other battery temperature readings and look for sudden jumps or dropouts that do not match conditions.
- Inspect sensor B's connector for incomplete seating, loose or corroded pins, and wiring damage where vibration or movement could interrupt contact.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to service information, check the sensor B signal, ground, and reference circuits for intermittent opens or unstable connections.
- If the fault is not apparent, follow the manufacturer's procedure to monitor sensor B and its circuit for dropouts while checking the harness and connections.
Common fixes
- Fully seat and secure the battery temperature sensor B connector.
- Clean or replace terminals with intermittent or corroded contact.
- Repair damaged wiring or restore a stable sensor ground and reference.
- Replace sensor B if its output remains erratic after wiring and connection faults are ruled out.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy driving and charging if the warning returns or the vehicle limits power, since intermittent temperature data can trigger hybrid-system restrictions. Stop if an overheating warning appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
