OBD-II fault code

P0A62: Drive Motor A Phase V Current High

What it means

Drive motor A phase V current is above the expected range. The code identifies a high-current condition but does not establish its cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor A phase V carries one part of the traction motor current controlled by the inverter. P0A62 sets when phase V current is above the expected range, which can result from excessive current or a fault in the motor or inverter path.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short between motor phases
  2. Rotor stalled - high stall current

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare phase V current with commanded torque and phases U and W to see when the high reading appears.
  2. With the vehicle made safe under the manufacturer's high-voltage procedure, inspect drive motor A and inverter phase V wiring and connectors for damage, looseness, or overheating.
  3. Check for related motor or inverter codes and whether the motor may have been stalled when the high current was recorded.
  4. Test the phase V current-sensing circuit and wiring using the manufacturer's procedure to rule out an erroneous high reading.
  5. If the sensing circuit passes, have the inverter and motor checked for a short between phases or a mechanical stall.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or loose phase V wiring and connector terminals.
  • Correct a confirmed motor stall or binding condition.
  • Repair the inverter or motor if testing confirms a short between phases.
  • Replace a phase V current sensor only if testing confirms it is reporting incorrectly.

Can I keep driving?

Excess phase V current can prompt reduced power or shutdown and may worsen inverter or motor damage. Avoid driving under load; stop safely if torque falls or a hybrid warning appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
