What it means
The generator rotor position sensor reports a circuit range/performance fault. Phase commutation cannot be controlled reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator position sensor tracks rotor angle for hybrid phase timing and generator control. The module sets this code when the sensor signal is present but its range or timing does not match the expected rotor position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor mechanically offset
- Electrical noise on signal line
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- Reduced hybrid performance
- Possible reduced-power mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare generator position readings with generator speed and operating commands to identify when the signal becomes implausible.
- With the hybrid system safely powered down according to the manufacturer's procedure, inspect the generator sensor connector and harness for damage, poor seating, contamination, or routing that may pick up electrical noise.
- Check generator sensor mounting and alignment for movement that could offset the reported rotor position.
- Review live position and speed data during a controlled operating check for a signal that is erratic or out of step with rotor speed.
- Test generator sensor circuit continuity and signal quality using the manufacturer's procedure and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit and alignment are sound, test the sensor for calibration drift or age-related failure.
Common fixes
- Secure the generator sensor connector and repair damaged or poorly routed wiring.
- Correct generator sensor mounting or alignment if it has shifted.
- Repair a ground or signal issue that introduces electrical noise.
- Replace the generator position sensor if its output falls outside the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if hybrid performance is reduced, and stop if the vehicle enters reduced-power mode or may shut down; unreliable generator timing can impair hybrid operation. If there are no symptoms, use the vehicle only as needed to reach diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
