OBD-II fault code

P0A4A: Drive Motor B Position Sensor Circuit Overspeed

What it means

The drive motor B rotor position sensor reports a circuit overspeed fault. Phase commutation cannot be controlled reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive motor B's position sensor tracks rotor position so the hybrid control system can time phase current. This code indicates the module detects an overspeed condition from the sensor circuit, which may reflect rotor-position data outside the expected range or a lost signal interpreted as overspeed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Rotor position out of expected range
  2. Position signal lost - default to overspeed indication

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and compare the reported drive motor B speed and position with vehicle speed and commanded torque to determine whether the overspeed reading is plausible.
  2. Check live data for drive motor B position or speed drop-outs, spikes, or disagreement with other available motor-speed readings.
  3. With the hybrid system powered down using the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect the sensor connector and harness for looseness, damage, or an intermittent open.
  4. Check drive motor B sensor mounting and alignment for movement or damage that could produce an incorrect rotor-position reading.
  5. Test the sensor signal continuity and quality while turning or operating the system only as directed by the manufacturer's procedure.
  6. If the circuit and alignment check out, test the drive motor B sensor and related rotor-position data against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure the sensor connector and repair any damaged harness wiring causing signal loss.
  • Correct drive motor B sensor mounting or alignment if it has shifted.
  • Repair an open or unstable signal circuit.
  • Replace the drive motor B position sensor if its signal triggers a false overspeed reading and fails the manufacturer's specification.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive if the warning is accompanied by reduced propulsion, limp mode, or possible shutdown; an implausible overspeed signal can cause the hybrid system to limit or cut motor output. If the vehicle operates normally, restrict use to diagnosis and avoid high-speed or high-load driving.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
