What it means
The generator rotor position sensor reports a circuit low fault. Phase commutation cannot be controlled reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator position sensor supplies rotor-angle information for hybrid phase control. This code is set when the generator sensor circuit voltage stays below its expected range, often because the signal is shorted to ground or the sensor is internally shorted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- Reduced hybrid performance
- Possible reduced-power mode
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and check live generator position readings for a persistently low signal or loss of position data.
- Power down the hybrid system using the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure and inspect the generator sensor connector for corrosion, moisture, bent pins, or poor seating.
- Inspect the signal wire for chafing or a short to ground along the generator sensor harness.
- Test the signal circuit for a short to ground and check sensor supply and ground connections according to the manufacturer's wiring diagram.
- Measure the circuit at the sensor and control-module ends to separate a wiring fault from an internal sensor short, using the manufacturer's specification.
- If the harness tests pass, test the generator position sensor for an internal short using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a generator sensor signal wire shorted to ground.
- Clean or replace corroded or damaged connector terminals.
- Repair a poor sensor supply or ground connection.
- Replace the generator position sensor if it is internally shorted or fails the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if hybrid performance is reduced, limp mode is active, or shutdown is possible, since the generator position signal is too low for dependable control. If the vehicle remains drivable, keep trips short and avoid relying on it for demanding use until diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
