OBD-II fault code

P0A4B: Generator Position Sensor Circuit

What it means

The generator rotor position sensor reports a circuit fault. Phase commutation cannot be controlled reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The generator position sensor reports rotor angle so the hybrid control system can time current to the generator's phases. This code is set when the generator sensor circuit has an electrical fault that prevents dependable position feedback.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
  • Reduced hybrid performance
  • Possible reduced-power mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and live generator position values to see whether the signal is absent, unstable, or implausible when the code sets.
  2. Power down the hybrid system using the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, then inspect the generator sensor connector and harness for loose connections, corrosion, or physical damage.
  3. Check the generator sensor wiring for opens, shorts, and poor ground or supply connections using the manufacturer's wiring diagram.
  4. Measure signal continuity and sensor supply and ground at the sensor and control-module ends, comparing readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring checks pass, test the generator position sensor for an internal circuit failure using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure the generator position-sensor connector and repair damaged wiring.
  • Clean or replace corroded or loose connector terminals.
  • Repair an open, short, or poor ground or supply connection in the generator sensor circuit.
  • Replace the generator position sensor if it fails the manufacturer's circuit test.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if hybrid performance is reduced, limp mode is active, or the vehicle may shut down, because generator control may be unreliable. If it remains drivable without symptoms, keep trips short and arrange prompt diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
