What it means
The generator rotor position sensor reports a circuit high fault. Phase commutation cannot be controlled reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The generator position sensor tracks rotor angle for the hybrid control system. This code is set when the sensor circuit voltage is above its expected range, which can occur with a signal short to battery voltage, an open sensor, or a connection fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine or hybrid-system warning light
- Reduced hybrid performance
- Possible reduced-power mode
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and inspect live generator position readings for a value stuck high or inconsistent with generator speed.
- With the hybrid system powered down according to the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect the generator sensor connector for corrosion, loose pins, or damage.
- Trace the signal wire for an open or contact with a B+ feed, especially at harness bends and connector entries.
- Follow the manufacturer's circuit test procedure to check for an open signal path and a short between the signal wire and battery positive.
- Test sensor supply, ground, and signal at both ends of the circuit to isolate wiring from a failed-open sensor.
- If the wiring passes, test the generator position sensor against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to B+ or an open in the generator sensor circuit.
- Clean, secure, or replace damaged connector terminals.
- Restore the generator sensor ground or supply connection if tests identify a fault.
- Replace the generator position sensor if it is open internally or fails the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Do not continue driving if hybrid performance drops, the vehicle enters reduced-power mode, or shutdown may occur; generator control depends on a valid rotor-position signal. If it drives normally, limit use and avoid high-load operation until the high signal is diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
