OBD-II fault code

P0A44: Drive Motor A Position Sensor Circuit Overspeed

What it means

The drive motor A rotor position sensor reports a circuit overspeed fault. Phase commutation cannot be controlled reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive Motor A's position sensor supplies rotor-position information used to control motor commutation. This overspeed code indicates that the control system has detected a position-sensor condition it interprets as motor speed exceeding the expected range; signal loss or implausible position data can also contribute. The code does not prove that the motor itself actually oversped.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Rotor position out of expected range
  2. Position signal lost - default to overspeed indication

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live data for Drive Motor A reported speed, position feedback, and torque command to determine whether the overspeed reading is plausible.
  2. Check for related Drive Motor A position-sensor or inverter codes that could explain a lost or distorted signal.
  3. Inspect the position-sensor connector and harness for loose fit, corrosion, damage, or routing that could cause signal loss.
  4. Check the sensor signal and wiring for continuity, shorts, and interference using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
  5. If wiring passes, test sensor alignment, position feedback, and the inverter input using the manufacturer's approved procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure a loose Drive Motor A position-sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor shielding that disrupts the position signal.
  • Correct sensor mounting or alignment if testing identifies a fault.
  • Replace the Drive Motor A sensor or repair the inverter input only when diagnosis confirms the failed part.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid high-speed driving and hard acceleration because implausible speed feedback can cause torque reduction or a shutdown response. Stop safely if the vehicle displays a stop warning or loses drive power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
