What it means
The drive motor B rotor position sensor reports a circuit range/performance fault. Phase commutation cannot be controlled reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Drive motor B's position sensor tracks the rotor so the hybrid control system can time current to the motor phases. The module sets this code when the sensor signal is present but its timing or pattern falls outside the expected range as the rotor turns.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor mechanically offset
- Electrical noise on signal line
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare drive motor B position readings with motor speed and commanded torque to see when the signal becomes implausible.
- With the vehicle powered down according to the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, inspect drive motor B's sensor connector and harness for damage, contamination, poor seating, or routing near sources of electrical noise.
- Check the sensor mounting and alignment for movement or damage that could leave the rotor position offset.
- Review live sensor data during a controlled operating check to see whether the position signal remains smooth and consistent with rotor speed.
- Test the drive motor B sensor circuit and signal quality using the manufacturer's procedure, then compare the sensor output and timing with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring and alignment are sound, test the sensor for an out-of-calibration or aged element and replace it if it fails the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Secure the drive motor B sensor connector and repair damaged or poorly routed wiring.
- Correct sensor mounting or alignment if it has shifted.
- Repair signal wiring or grounding that is introducing electrical noise.
- Replace the drive motor B position sensor if its output is outside the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if power is reduced, limp mode is active, or the hybrid system may shut down; loss of reliable motor timing can leave the vehicle without expected propulsion. If it drives normally, limit use to a short trip for diagnosis and stop if warnings or power loss worsen.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
