OBD-II fault code

P0A43: Drive Motor A Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent

What it means

The drive motor A rotor position sensor reports a circuit intermittent fault. Phase commutation cannot be controlled reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive Motor A's position sensor lets the inverter track rotor position for phase commutation. This intermittent code means the monitored circuit or signal drops out or becomes unstable at times rather than staying consistently out of range. A loose connector, vibration-sensitive contact, or noisy ground can interrupt the feedback and cause abrupt torque limits.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector not seated
  2. Noisy ground reference
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and code history for the conditions when Drive Motor A position feedback dropped out, and check for related sensor or ground codes.
  2. Inspect the Drive Motor A position-sensor connector for incomplete latching, moisture, corrosion, or terminals that do not grip securely.
  3. Examine the harness routing and insulation for rubbing, tension, or damage that could open the circuit with vibration or movement.
  4. Use live data and the manufacturer's approved stationary test to watch for position-signal dropouts while checking accessible wiring and connectors for intermittent contact.
  5. If the connections and harness pass, test the sensor ground reference and position sensor against the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and lock the Drive Motor A position-sensor connector.
  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged connector terminals.
  • Repair chafed wiring or a poor ground connection in the sensor circuit.
  • Replace the Drive Motor A position sensor if testing confirms intermittent internal failure.

Can I keep driving?

Because the fault can interrupt motor torque without warning, avoid high-speed travel and heavy acceleration until it is diagnosed. Pull over safely if the vehicle loses power or displays a stop warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
