What it means
The drive motor A rotor position sensor reports a circuit high fault. Phase commutation cannot be controlled reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Drive Motor A's position sensor reports rotor position so the inverter can time current to the motor phases. This high-circuit code means the monitored sensor signal is above its expected electrical range; an open circuit or short to power can cause that, among other faults. The module may limit motor torque because it cannot rely on the position reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced motor power or torque
- Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live data for Drive Motor A position-sensor voltage or status, plus related hybrid codes, to confirm the high reading.
- With the vehicle made safe under the manufacturer's high-voltage procedure, inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, loose fit, or damage.
- Check the signal wire for a short to power and check the sensor supply, return, and continuity against the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
- Inspect connector terminals for poor contact or corrosion that could interrupt the sensor circuit, and repair any confirmed connection fault.
- If the wiring checks pass, test the Drive Motor A sensor and inverter input using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to power in the Drive Motor A sensor circuit.
- Repair or replace corroded, damaged, or poorly seated connector terminals.
- Repair an open sensor circuit or damaged harness found during continuity checks.
- Replace the Drive Motor A position sensor or inverter input only if testing confirms the fault is internal.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and high-speed driving because the inverter may limit torque or enter limp mode when Drive Motor A position feedback is unreliable. If drive power drops sharply or a stop warning appears, pull over safely.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
