OBD-II fault code

P095D: Gear Shift Position Circuit High C

What it means

The gear shift position circuit C reports a circuit high fault. Gear shift position feedback is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear shift position circuit C carries the position sensor's signal to the transmission control module. The module monitors the signal level to identify selector position. P095D sets when circuit C reads higher than expected, which can be caused by a signal wire shorted to power, an open connection, or a sensor fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live position data for circuit C to see whether the reading stays high regardless of selector position.
  2. Inspect the position sensor connector and circuit C harness for damaged insulation, loose or corroded terminals, and contact with a power feed.
  3. Check the sensor supply and ground connections using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. Following the manufacturer's procedure, test circuit C for a short to power, an open, or poor terminal contact.
  5. If the circuit checks pass, measure the position sensor output through selector movement and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the position sensor connector.
  • Repair circuit C wiring shorted to power or damaged at a connector.
  • Replace the position sensor if its output remains high with the circuit wiring in good condition.
  • Clear the code and verify that position feedback tracks selector movement and limp mode clears.

Can I keep driving?

Do not continue driving if the vehicle is stuck in gear or the selected gear is not reliably recognized. If shifting remains predictable, keep any trip short and avoid towing or heavy traffic because the fault can trigger limp mode or missed shifts.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
