OBD-II fault code

P095C: Gear Shift Position Circuit Low C

What it means

The gear shift position circuit C reports a circuit low fault. Gear shift position feedback is unreliable on this channel.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear shift position circuit C carries the position sensor's signal to the transmission control module. The module monitors the signal level to determine selector position. P095C sets when circuit C voltage is lower than expected, which can result from a sensor fault, wiring problem, or high resistance at a connector.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live position data for circuit C to see whether it remains at a low reading across selector positions.
  2. Inspect the position sensor connector and circuit C wiring for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or damage that could pull the signal low.
  3. Check the sensor supply and ground connections, paying particular attention to poor contact or high resistance at connector pins.
  4. Following the manufacturer's procedure, measure the circuit C signal and check for a short to ground or excessive resistance in the wiring.
  5. If the wiring and connections pass, test the position sensor output against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair a circuit C wire shorted to ground or damaged by chafing.
  • Replace the position sensor if it continues to produce a low output with sound wiring and connections.
  • Clear the fault and confirm position data changes correctly and the transmission leaves limp mode.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the transmission is stuck in gear or gear selection is unreliable, since low position feedback can trigger limp mode. If it shifts predictably, limit travel and avoid heavy traffic or towing until repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
