What it means
The gear shift reverse actuator reports a circuit/open fault. Reverse gear engagement is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The reverse shift actuator moves the transmission mechanism into reverse when commanded. This code indicates an open circuit in the reverse actuator path, so the transmission control module may be unable to command reverse gear reliably.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Actuator fault
- Wiring fault
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live gear and actuator status while selecting reverse to confirm the fault is tied to the reverse command.
- Inspect the reverse actuator connector for a backed-out pin, loose fit, corrosion, or damaged wiring.
- Check the reverse actuator harness for breaks or chafing, gently moving it while monitoring the circuit for an intermittent open.
- Measure continuity through the reverse actuator circuit and actuator winding using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- If the circuit and winding pass, verify the module's reverse command and output against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Reseat a pushed-back pin or secure the reverse actuator connector.
- Repair a break or damaged wire in the reverse actuator circuit.
- Replace the reverse actuator if its winding is open.
- Repair the module output circuit only if testing confirms a control-module fault.
Can I keep driving?
You may be unable to select reverse, so do not park where reversing is necessary or drive if the transmission also loses forward gears. Arrange recovery if the vehicle cannot be moved safely.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
