OBD-II fault code

P0927: Gear Shift Reverse Actuator Circuit High

What it means

The gear shift reverse actuator reports a circuit high fault. Reverse gear engagement is impaired. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The reverse shift actuator moves the transmission mechanism into reverse under control-module command. This code sets when the reverse actuator circuit signal is higher than expected, potentially preventing the actuator from following that command.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator fault
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and monitor the reverse actuator circuit reading while selecting reverse to determine when the high condition occurs.
  2. Inspect the reverse actuator wiring and connector for damaged insulation, corrosion, loose pins, or a short to a power feed.
  3. Gently move the reverse actuator harness while watching live circuit data for a changing high reading.
  4. Test the reverse circuit for shorts to power and check continuity and connection quality using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring passes, test the reverse actuator and module output using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded reverse actuator connector.
  • Repair wiring shorted to power or otherwise damaged in the reverse actuator circuit.
  • Replace the reverse actuator if it fails its specified electrical test.
  • Repair a confirmed faulty transmission control module output.

Can I keep driving?

Reverse may be unavailable or unreliable, so avoid driving where reversing or precise maneuvering is needed. Stop if forward drive is also affected or the transmission slips, and arrange recovery if it cannot be moved safely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
