OBD-II fault code

P0923: Gear Shift Forward Actuator Circuit High

What it means

The gear shift forward actuator circuit reports a high fault. Forward gear engagement is impaired. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The forward shift actuator moves the mechanism that selects forward gears when the transmission control module commands it. This code sets when the module detects a circuit signal above the expected range, so the actuator may not follow the forward gear command correctly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator fault
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and monitor the forward actuator circuit reading during a forward gear request to identify when the high condition appears.
  2. Inspect the forward actuator connector and wiring for damaged insulation, corrosion, loose pins, or a short to a power feed.
  3. Move the forward actuator harness gently while watching live circuit data to check for a changing high reading.
  4. Test the circuit for shorts to power and verify continuity and connections using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the harness passes, test the forward actuator and module output for an electrical fault using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean a loose or corroded forward actuator connector.
  • Repair wiring shorted to power or otherwise damaged in the forward actuator circuit.
  • Replace the forward actuator if it fails the manufacturer's electrical test.
  • Repair a confirmed faulty transmission control module output.

Can I keep driving?

Keep driving to a minimum because forward gears may engage unpredictably or the transmission may shift poorly. Stop if the vehicle loses drive, slips, or cannot select a gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
