OBD-II fault code

P0926: Gear Shift Reverse Actuator Circuit Low

What it means

The gear shift reverse actuator reports a circuit low fault. Reverse gear engagement is impaired. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The reverse shift actuator electrically moves the transmission mechanism into reverse when requested. This code sets when the module sees the reverse actuator circuit signal below its expected range, which can stop or disrupt reverse engagement.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator fault
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and monitor the reverse actuator circuit reading while selecting reverse to confirm when the low condition occurs.
  2. Inspect the reverse actuator connector for moisture, corrosion, a loose pin, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
  3. Move the reverse actuator harness gently while watching live data to see whether the low reading changes.
  4. Check the reverse circuit for shorts to ground, excessive resistance, and poor continuity using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the harness and connections pass, test the reverse actuator winding and module output using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a corroded or loose reverse actuator connector.
  • Repair chafed or shorted wiring in the reverse actuator circuit.
  • Replace the reverse actuator if it fails the manufacturer's electrical test.
  • Repair a confirmed faulty module output circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Reverse may fail or engage inconsistently, so avoid situations that require reversing and park only where you can leave safely. If the transmission also loses forward drive or slips, stop and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
