OBD-II fault code

P0922: Gear Shift Forward Actuator Circuit Low

What it means

The gear shift forward actuator circuit reports a low fault. Forward gear engagement is impaired. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The forward shift actuator is electrically commanded to move the mechanism that engages forward gears. This code sets when the module sees the forward actuator circuit voltage or signal below its expected range, which can prevent reliable forward engagement.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Actuator fault
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and watch the forward actuator circuit reading while requesting a forward gear to confirm when the low condition occurs.
  2. Inspect the forward actuator connector and harness for moisture, corrosion, chafing, loose pins, or a pin pushed back in the connector.
  3. While monitoring the live circuit reading, gently move the forward actuator harness to see whether the low reading changes.
  4. Check the circuit for excessive resistance, shorts to ground, and poor continuity using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring and connector checks pass, test the forward actuator winding and module output using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a corroded or loose forward actuator connector.
  • Repair chafed, water-damaged, or shorted forward actuator wiring.
  • Replace the forward actuator if its electrical test is outside specification.
  • Repair a confirmed faulty module output circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary driving because the vehicle may not engage forward gears or may enter limp mode. If forward drive is lost or the transmission slips, stop safely and arrange recovery to prevent further damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
